10 Logistics Terms You Should Know

Unless you handle logistics for a living, you likely aren’t aware of common terms used in supply chain, logistics and transportation. If you work for a business, however, that regularly ships goods, or is planning to, there are some common terms you should know:

  1. Air Freight. A service involving the air transportation of goods and commodities, and it allows for faster shipping times, low damage ratios and for certain commodities – lower shipping costs.
  2. Bill of Lading. A document issued by a carrier to a shipper that furnishes evidence regarding receipt of freight, the conditions on which transportation is made and the date to deliver goods to the lawful holder of the bill of lading.
  3. An individual for firm that acts as an agent, often between a buyer and a seller of commodities, in return for a fee or commission.
  4. Goods or merchandise transported by airplane, ship or vehicle.
  5. An individual or firm who, through a contract of carriage, performs or procures the movement of goods or commodities via rail, sea, air, inland waterways, or a combination thereof.
  6. A tax levied by a government on the merchandise imported, or exported, to or from another country.
  7. The transport of goods away from a country for sale in another country.
  8. All things treated as movable and indicated as sold to a particular provider including merchandise, supplies, raw materials, commodities and finished product.
  9. To bring commodities from a foreign country that have been processed or assembled in other countries.
  10. The transportation of goods from one location to another, by one shipper, with one bill of lading, from one delivery location, for one consignee.
