Since 1977, United Van Lines has been tracking migration patterns on a state-by-state basis. In 2013, the study looked at household moves handled by United Van Lines and its agents within the 48 contiguous states and Washington, D.C.

Some of the highlights from the 37th Annual Migration Study included:

Oregon became the top moving destination in 2013 with 61% of moves to the state being inbound ones.
District of Columbia fell from the top spot on the 2012 inbound list, ranking fourth behind North Carolina.
• New additions in 2013 to the inbound list included South Dakota, Texas and Colorado.
• After 16 years near the top of the outbound list, Michigan finally balanced the scales this year, reporting nearly as many inbound moves as outbound in 2013.
New Jersey again claimed the top spot on the outbound list, a position that it has held for three of the last four years.
