Four Ways to Make the Most of Your Next Office Relocation

Moving to a new office space can be both exciting and stressful. On the one hand, it is an opportunity to infuse new energy into a company – sometimes all that is needed is a change of scenery to drive productivity and creativity. However, if you are a manager or facilities coordinator preparing for an upcoming move, you know how much work will go into ensuring a smooth and successful transition.

For more than 60 years, King Companies has provided a one-stop-shop for companies of all sizes and vertical industries – from law firms and medical offices to laboratories and libraries to data centers and film studios – that are on the move. Our experience has taught us that while some office relocations are simple and easy, others can be very complex. Regardless, there are some key steps that all companies should take in order to make the most of their next office relocation, and they include:

  • Plan the move. This is an important first step that includes creating a timeline with important dates associated with the relocation to ensure everyone in the office is on the same page, understands what will be expected of them during the move, and will be prepared once moving day arrives.
  • Engage your employees. Providing employees with the opportunity to be involved in the planning and execution of the upcoming relocation can lower stress and reduce anxiety. Involve them in packing office furniture, equipment and fixtures and helping with logistics leading up to and during the move. There are many things that employees can do to help share the workload and ensure the relocation goes smoothly.
  • Nobody wants to show up at a business only to find out it has moved. Make sure key stakeholders (employees, customers) are well aware of your upcoming move have your contact information, as well as the date you will start doing business at your new location. Don’t forget to notify vendors and suppliers (i.e. cleaning staff, coffee service, plant caregivers, the telephone, electric and gas companies, post office, etc.) regarding your move to ensure that services continue on schedule after the relocation.
  • Be enthusiastic. If you are optimistic and enthusiastic about the upcoming move, your team will follow suit, and this will go a long way toward making your next office relocation your best ever.
