Planning Your Summer Relocation

Planning Your Summer Relocation

Planning Your Summer Relocation

Whether moving to a new residence across town, or across the country, the summer months are an ideal time for families to relocate. The kids are out of school, mom and dad have more flexibility in planning vacation time around a move, and the sunny and warm weather in most parts of the country can help make the move go much smoother, as there is little threat of rain, snow or other inclement weather to delay or postpone the move.

There are a few things, however, that must be taken into consideration when relocating during the summer:

1) Make arrangements early with your relocation company. Because so many people move during the summer, these services book up early. It is best to book as far in advance as possible to ensure that you have the proper resources to help you with your relocation.

2) If possible, be flexible with your moving date. Mid-week moves can be less busy than weekend moves, especially if you are just relocating across town. It will be easier to book resources for a mid-week move, and there will be much less hassle for you and your family.

3) Avoid scheduling your relocation for the hottest part of the summer. If you must move during the hottest days of July and August, make sure to do the “heavy lifting” portion of the move in the coolest parts of the day. Whether it is you, or the relocation company that is moving the boxes, furniture and other items, working during the coolest parts of the day is the best way to avoid heat-related illnesses such as dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Also, don’t forget to wear sunscreen and drink plenty of water during your relocation!

4) Take time to safeguard heat-sensitive household items such as plants, fine art, candles, make-up, electronics and food. Sun, humidity and high temperatures can damage these items. It is best to pack and move these items separately if possible, taking care to make sure that these items are not left in a hot car or truck for an extended period of time.

5) If you have pets, make sure that they are taken care of and kept healthy by setting up a cool, shady spot for them to rest while you are preparing for the move. Never leave a pet in a hot car during a summer move, and make sure you give them plenty of cool water to drink. You may even want to consider taking them to a pet day care facility while you move, to ensure that they have a cool environment where someone can keep an eye on them.

Taking all this into consideration, our best piece of advice to you when relocating during the summer is to plan ahead. King Companies can help, and we hope that you will consider us as a partner in your upcoming relocation.
