Three Best Practices For Selecting an International Relocation Firm

Three Best Practices For Selecting an International Relocation Firm

Moving to a foreign country can be the start of an exciting adventure. Yet, moving across international borders is not without its challenges. Whether relocating abroad to take a new job, study or teach at a local university, or even to retire, there are certain best practices that should be followed to ensure that the move goes as smoothly as possible.

It goes without saying that a professional firm with experience in international moves can help alleviate much of the stress and strain associated with relocating abroad; as they can help smooth the way by providing advice on housing, schools, local attractions and amenities, and guide you through rules and regulations, or any taxes or insurance requirements for your new home country.

As such, for advice on selecting a professional mover for your international relocation, we turned to the experts here at King Companies for their top tips:

  • Ask for referrals. Before you hire a professional, though, it is best to do your homework. Ask your employer, trusted colleagues, friends and family members for referrals. You can also research relocation firms online with services such as Angie’s List and Yelp! to identify movers in your area with international expertise.
  • Vet the relocation firms. Once you have a list of referrals, check to make sure the firms are properly licensed for international relocations. Reputable international household goods movers will be licensed by the FMC as an Ocean Transportation Intermediary, or OTI. It is important to note that different licensing is needed for cross-border relocations to Canada and Mexico, so check with your relocation firm to make sure they have the proper licensing and paperwork in place for these types of moves.
  • Obtain estimates. Whether you are relocating temporarily or permanently, you should know in advance how much it will cost to move your household goods, as well as any expenses associated with storing items either in the U.S., if the move is temporary; or overseas until you find a permanent home. Furthermore, the cost of an international relocation can vary based on the moving destination and requirements, and also the relocation firm itself. It’s important to get several estimates so that you can compare and contrast the various services that are available.

If you, or someone you know has an international relocation in their future, we hope that the tips our experts have provided on choosing a professional moving firm are helpful. For more information on international relocations, check out these resources from United Van Lines and UniGroup:
