3 Things You Should be Doing Right Now

3 Things You Should be Doing Right Now

At the close of a year fraught with challenges that none of us have ever experienced within our lifetimes, our thoughts turn to the businesses that have been disrupted by the global health crisis.

The impacts of the pandemic have been felt broadly across the business world. While some businesses have had to shut down operations entirely, others deemed essential have kept going. Further, businesses that have had the flexibility to do so, were able to transition entire workforces to remote work scenarios.

Throughout all of this, the topic of security has come to the forefront. And, while much of the focus has been on cybersecurity, protecting your physical assets including your office space, any paper files, and the furniture, fixtures and IT equipment, is equally important.

As we enter a new year, and businesses continue to evolve their operations to meet the ongoing restrictions posed by the pandemic, some businesses may close or downsize their physical operations, or even relocate geographically, as crowded cities become less appealing from a recruitment standpoint.

However, regardless of where you plan to take your business in 2021, there are three things you need to be doing right now to protect your business:

  • Safeguard your office or building. If you haven’t already done this, it is an important step in reducing your risk and liability. Whether you own or lease the space, you are responsible for its condition, so make sure all the doors and windows (if applicable) are secured, that the building is being monitored on a 24×7 basis using physical and perimeter security solutions. This is especially important if your building is no longer occupied by employees. And, if during this time you are moving physical assets in and/or out of the building, walls, floors and other surfaces should be protected from damage.
  • Safeguard your data. Data breaches aren’t just caused by hackers penetrating digital networks – the improper disposal of paper by businesses can also lead to both legal and financial problems. It is important to properly destroy both paper and digital files to keep them out of the hands of opportunists and “dumpster divers.” Shredding services like Iron Mountain, for example can help you safely and securely purge unwanted data and files before you relocate.
  • Safeguard your assets. With employees working remotely, you may have unused IT equipment sitting around your office. It’s important to protect these items from dust, dirt, moisture, static and physical impact from earthquakes, for example. If you haven’t already done so, consider having your physical IT assets properly wrapped by relocation experts. Regardless of whether you are moving, putting items in storage or preparing for liquidation, these physical assets should be protected.
