4 Ways to Prepare for Your In-Home Estimate

So, you’ve decided to relocate. One of the first decisions you must make is how to move your household and personal belongings to your new home. If you are hiring a professional mover to relocate you and/or your family, then one of the first steps in this process is the in-home estimate.

After you set an appointment for your in-home estimate, you’ll want to make sure you are ready when the representative from the moving company arrives at your doorstep. To help you better prepare for the visit from the moving company, we asked the relocation experts here at King Companies what they advise their clients to do prior to an in-home estimate:

1) Know your moving date. Relocation costs can vary based on the time of year you are planning to move. For example, May through August is considered “peak season” and relocation firms will charge more due to greater demand during that time period. Further, if you are moving over a holiday weekend, your move may also cost you more. If you are flexible in your moving dates, scheduling a move during the middle of the week, or adjusting your timeline to avoid peak season, can help save you money.

2) Take inventory. You may have furniture and other items you plan to leave behind, sell, put into storage, or donate. It’s important to know exactly which items you will be moving as that will help to increase the accuracy of the estimate provided to you by your moving professional.

3) Create a budget. You should have a figure in mind in terms of how much you are willing to, or expecting to spend on your relocation. If you are moving to take a new job and your employer is providing moving assistance, be sure to include that in your budget. Having this information in advance will help guide the conversation with the representative from the moving company, as they can offer advice on areas where you can make adjustments to ensure you meet your budgetary requirements.

4) Do your research and prepare a list of questions. You will likely have a lot of questions about the process and services provided by the relocation firm. It’s best to identify those questions in advance so you don’t forget to ask them while the moving professional is in your home. Some great questions to ask include:

  • How long will it take to move my belongings?
  • Will you provide packing assistance? Is there an extra fee for that?
  • What is the best way to prepare my belonging for the move?
  • Can I purchase moving supplies from you?
  • Do you insure my items? Is extra coverage available for high-value items?
  • Will you be able to relocate my vehicle?
  • Can you store my belongings if my new residence isn’t available on time?
