Four Earth-Friendly Ways to Refresh and Renew Your Space

The start of a New Year is always a great time for reflecting on the past, and looking toward the future. This year is a little bit different, though, as there is still uncertainty due to the global health crisis, which can make it harder to envision the future. However, you can still set goals and make plans for the coming year, and home is a great place to start!

Over the past twelve months, the word home has taken on new meaning as it has come to serve many purposes – office, classroom, gathering place for dining and entertainment, and let’s not forget sleeping! Now, with Spring just a couple of months away, there is no time like the present to clean out and organize our homes. Not only is this an important part of increasing the functionality and usability of this space, but decluttering and cleaning can bring renewed energy and focus.

To help you on this journey, our experts here at King Companies came up with four earth-friendly ways to refresh and renew your space:

  • Resell or liquidate unwanted furniture and household goods. The volume of used goods on the market today makes it very difficult to do this. If successful, however, this will hardly cost you a thing, and could even provide you with a profit. There’s even an app for it! Some popular apps to check out include Chairish, Everything But the House, and 5miles.
  • Repurpose (donate) unwanted goods. Repurposing is a great way to avoid the landfill, while at the same time supporting a good cause. King Companies works with a network of charities that includes more than 1,000 local nonprofits here in the U.S. and abroad, and we are happy to help provide you with some referrals.
  • Plastics, metals and other materials can be separated into proper recycling condition and then incorporated into other goods. Collected materials can go well beyond the basics and include e-waste, hazardous waste, and more. Check out local non-profits for collection dates for e-Waste and other goods. These events are held regularly throughout the year, and have the added benefit of raising money for a good cause.
  • Remove and dispose of unwanted items. Only to be used as a last resort, removal should not be confused with recycling. Despite widespread recycling, 30% or more of unwanted items today still end up in landfills. This not only costs you money through the fees to pay to access the landfill, but it will also impact our planet for years to come.

Getting rid of furniture and household items you no longer want is a great way to start the year out on the right (and decluttered) foot. And, as an added bonus, it can be therapeutic!
