The summer months can be an ideal time during which to make a household move. For starters, disruptions to the family routine are minimal as children are out of school. Next, work schedules can be more flexible due to vacation time and natural lulls in the workplace that occur during the summer months. Finally, the weather is generally better as winter storms subside in favor of warmer temperatures.
However, because many find this an ideal time to relocate, there are five things you should consider before you start planning your “peak season” move:
1) Plan ahead. Contact your relocation company as far in advance as possible. Moving companies book up quickly, which can leave you with very limited options if you wait until the last minute.
2) Move mid-week. Relocation companies tend to be busier on the weekends because movers want to take advantage of the time off for local and short distance moves. If you are flexible, schedule a mid-week move. As an added bonus, you may find there are cost-advantages and more resources available for your mid-week move.
3) Be flexible. If your desired moving date isn’t available, consider other options near that date, and be willing to slide your move a few days, if needed.
4) Budget accordingly. The cost of peak season moves tends to fluctuate based on anticipated demand. Moving around the busiest days of the year, i.e. Memorial Day, Fourth of July or Labor Day weekend, could cost more. If you absolutely must moving around one of these dates, be prepared to pay more.
5) Don’t hire “rogue” movers. The “best” deal in moving, isn’t always the “right” deal. Don’t put you, or your family at risk by letting just anyone relocate your household goods. For the best move, hire a reputable relocation firm. Only the professionals will have the experience needed to efficiently relocate you, and your family.
