The start of the school year brings a new beginning for families with school-aged children and teens. Throughout the coming year, there will be new skills to be learned, and new information to be absorbed in math, sciences, social studies and history, of course. And, for some there will even be new friendships to be formed – especially for those of you who have relocated to a new city or town during the summer months.
With the unpacking done, the household all set-up, and the kids enrolled in school, you may be wondering what’s next? Whether you are a veteran mover, or this is your first time relocating, it’s hard to know where to start when it comes to getting to know your new neighbors, so we’ve come up with five tips:
1) Join the PTA. Volunteering with your child’s school is a great way to get to know the teachers, the parents and the kids that your child is interacting with on a daily basis. You can volunteer as much, or as little, as you like, as any and all help is welcome. So, whether you spend an hour or two each week in your child’s classroom, or help out with an occasional fundraising event, you will get to know people faster and learn more about your community.
2) Enroll Your Child in Sports. Baseball, soccer, and other activities are a great way to get to know people in your community. These activities offer regular interaction with other parents of children your age, and give you an opportunity to learn more about events and activities geared toward families in your community. For more information on local youth sports, check out American Youth Soccer Organization, Little League, and PONY Baseball and Softball.
3) Check Out Local Clubs and Organizations. Most communities have groups that enable moms (and dads!) to meet regularly with other parents to learn about what is going on in the community, hear from motivational speakers and parenting experts, and network with each other. Great resources for finding these types of groups include Parents Meetups (Meetup.com) or Moms Club®.
4) Attend Community Events. Many communities and local organizations host Fall events such as harvest festivals, pumpkin patches, holiday bazaars, and more. Check out your local newspaper for more information on these types of events. They make a fun family outing, and are a great way to learn more about the people and organizations that make up your new community.
5) Go to Church. Local churches, synagogues, temples and religious organizations have many activities centered around developing strong families and community involvement. Not only do they offer an opportunity to get to know other families with children, there are also many ways that you can volunteer and provide community service.
The great thing about having children is that it opens up many opportunities, such as those listed above, to connect with your local community. While every community is different, don’t be afraid to become involved and get to know your neighbors. You never know what rewards will be in store for you, and your family!
