Planning for Your Next Relocation: When is the Best Time to Move?

Planning for Your Next Relocation: When is the Best Time to Move?

According to data published in March of this year MovingLabor.com, on average more than 40 million people move each year in the United States. It is estimated that 80% of those moves occur between April and September, also known as “peak season” in the relocation business.

Knowing this, when is the best time for you to make your move? It depends. Ultimately, you have to make the decision of when to move based on your needs and requirements (i.e. are you moving for a job, to be closer to family, selling your home, etc.), personal preference and budget.

Regardless of when you decide to relocate, there are certain advantages to moving during each of the four seasons.

  • This can be a great time to move as the weather is generally cooler and milder and your move may cost less given that it is outside of the traditional “peak season” months.
  • This is generally the least expensive time to move during the year as demand is lower, which means moving companies have more flexibility in scheduling your move and providing the resources you need. However, keep in mind that if you have school-aged children, this may not be the best time to move given school schedules.
  • Similar to the fall months, the weather in spring tends to be more mild and demand for relocation services can be lighter, especially during March and early April. This means that it may be less expensive to move and you’ll have more flexibility when it comes to relocation resources.
  • Summer is a great time to move if you have school-aged children or are selling your home. The summer months are when demand is higher for real estate, and moving during this time won’t impact your children’s school schedules. However, because demand for services is higher during these “peak season” months, your move may be more expensive and resources will be tight, which can lead to less flexibility in selecting a move date.

Other things to consider when selecting a time to relocate include planning toward a mid-month move, or moving during the work week. There is generally less demand for relocation services in the middle of the month, and Monday through Thursday, as fewer people tend to move during these times. Selecting an “off peak” time like this can also save you money, and give you more flexibility when selecting a move date.
