Six Tips for a Safe and Healthy Relocation

Six Tips for a Safe and Healthy Relocation

Six Tips for a Safe and Healthy Relocation

At one time or another, all of us relocate. It starts early in life when we move out of our parents homes and into college dorms or apartments. Then, as we get older, establish careers and start families, we move into bigger apartments, condos or houses, sometimes relocating to new towns and cities to take jobs or fulfill family commitments. This cycle often continues through retirement when some of us will choose to downsize based on our desired lifestyles.

Regardless of the reason for your relocation, it can be both an exciting and stressful time for you, and your family members. Beyond the logistics of the move – hiring a moving company, packing, cleaning, transferring utilities, etc., you must also ensure that everyone stays safe and healthy during the relocation.

To help you be at your best during your next move, our relocation experts here at King Companies have come up with “Six Tips for Staying Safe and Healthy During Your Next Relocation”:

  • 1) Establish a timeline and task list. When you first find out you are going to be relocating, sit down and determine your moving date. Next, make a list of everything that needs to be done before moving day, and then prioritize these tasks based on when they must be completed. For example, hiring a moving company should be done right away, while tasks such as transferring utilities and putting in a change of address form with the post office can be done closer to moving day.
  • 2) Pace yourself. Don’t rush to complete all of your moving tasks in a single day, space them out over multiple days or weeks, if possible. The only exception would be if you were required to move on very short notice. It’s best to check off a few tasks each day leading up to the move, and keep that list in a place where you can see the progress you are making. This will help keep you on track, and prevent you from getting overwhelmed.
  • 3) Dress comfortably. Wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothes can help reduce your stress levels during your move. This is especially important on moving day when you’ll be going in and out of your house, packing up last minute items, running errands and cleaning.
  • 4) Eat right. It’s tempting to rely on take-out for meals during this busy time, and it’s okay to order in, just make sure to include some healthy choices. For example, when ordering pizza add a salad. And, make sure to keep fresh whole fruit, energy bars and lots of water on hand, especially during that last week of your move. If you have to travel a great distance to your new home, don’t resort to the drive-thru window for every meal. Find a few sit down restaurants along the way where you can enjoy a slow-cooked meal.
  • 5) Plan for children and pets. Small children and pets can become easily stressed and overwhelmed during your relocation. For days when you have a lot of errands to run and tasks to complete, arrange for a sitter. On moving day, find someone to watch your kids and your pets. This will allow you to focus completely on the move, and eliminates some of the distraction and worry.
  • 6) Remember to breathe. During the relocation, don’t forget to take short breaks to decompress and get away from your move, even if it is just for a few minutes. Take a walk around the block, have a light snack or just sit and relax. These short “breathers” will help prevent you from getting burned out by your move.

There are certainly many other things that you can do to help make the most of your next relocation, and we are here to help! For more information on how King Relocation Services can make your next move your best move, visit us at King Relocation.
