U.S. Migration Study

U.S. Migration Study

U.S. Migration Study

Survey Says: More Americans are Moving to Idaho

Earlier this month, United Van Lines released its
43rd Annual National Movers Study, which revealed Idaho as the most popular moving destination for 2019. If you have friends or family members who relocated to the Gem State last year, you are not alone. This is Idaho’s first time leading the list of inbound states in more than 25 years.

Another interesting finding from the annual survey was that more Baby Boomer generation Americans moved than any other group last year, demonstrating that those between the ages of 55 and 74 are driving migration patterns. This doesn’t surprise us with many Baby Boomers still just now reaching retirement age and relocating to be closer to family members or put down roots in milder climates. In fact, the southwestern and southeastern states were very popular destinations last year with Arizona, New Mexico, South Carolina, North Carolina and Florida all ranking among the top inbound states. And, according to the survey, more residents relocated to Florida for retirement, or a lifestyle change, than any other state.

The 2019 survey also found that across all regions, a major driver of migration continues to be career change. Approximately one out of every two people who moved with United Van Lines in the past year moved for a new job or company transfer. Last year, Washington, D.C. saw the largest influx of residents due to career changes.

Since 1977, United Van Lines has annually tracked migration patterns on a state-by-state basis. The 2019 study is based on household moves handled by United within the 48 contiguous states and Washington, D.C. and ranks states based off the inbound and outbound percentages of total moves in each state. United classifies states as “high inbound” if 55 percent or more of the moves are going into a state, “high outbound” if 55 percent or more moves were coming out of a state or “balanced” if the difference between inbound and outbound is negligible.

Below is a map that provides a visual illustration of the highest inbound and outbound states for 2019:

Each year, our team looks forward to the release of United Van Lines’ annual migration study as we find it to be helpful in planning for the coming year. By understanding national relocation trends we can better anticipate demand for our relocation services. Further, the data collected by United Van Lines also provides us with valuable insight as to why people are moving from state-to-state – whether it be to take a new job, move closer to family, or retire. Having this information helps us to better understand our customers’ needs and adapt our services accordingly. For more information on the study
