United Van Lines’ Annual National Mover’s Study Shows Americans Continue to Migrate West and South

Illinois had the highest percentage of outbound moves, while Vermont reported the highest percentage of inbound moves

This month, United Van Lines released its 41st Annual National Mover’s Study, which showed that Americans continue to move westward, settling in the Mountain and Pacific West States, while the Northeastern part of the country and the Midwest continue to lose residents.

The findings of this annual migration study are based on data gathered on household moves handled by United Van Lines and its agents within the 48 contiguous states and Washington, D.C. during 2017. The map below provides a visual overview of the top inbound and outbound states for last year:

Some of the take-aways from the 2017 study that we found most interesting include:

· The Mountain West region experienced an inbound moving rate of 54 percent, and continues to remain a popular destination for retirees with one and four movers indicating they chose to relocate in this region for retirement.

· Oregon was the highest ranking western state with 65 percent of moves being inbound. Of those, nearly half reported moving to Oregon due to a new job or company transfer, while about one in four cited proximity to family as the reason for their inbound move.

· The Midwest and Pacific West were top regions attracting movers who were relocating to take new jobs. The region reporting the largest exodus of residents looking to find jobs elsewhere was the South.

· The northeastern part of the U.S. experienced a “moving deficit” again in 2017 with New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut ranking high on the list of outbound states. Additionally, Massachusetts joined the list of outbound states in 2017, while Illinois moved into top spot on the high outbound list.

· Vermont remained an exception to the outbound trend throughout the Northeast, moving up to no. 1 on the list of inbound states.

Each year, our team looks forward to the release of United Van Lines’ annual migration study as we find it to be helpful in planning for the coming year. By understanding national relocation trends we can better anticipate demand for our relocation services. Further, the data collected by United Van Lines also provides us with valuable insight as to why people are moving from state-to-state – whether it be to take a new job, move closer to family, or retire. Having this information helps us to better understand our customers’ needs and adapt our services accordingly. For more information on the study click here.
